Inside Iowa Politics: Innocent people at risk because of election lies

DES MOINES, Iowa - (Gray Media Iowa State Capitol Bureau) There may be no point in modern history that lies, falsehoods, and confusion about voting have been so dangerous to the professionals and volunteers committed to your right to vote and for the foundation of the country. State and federal election security officials have been briefing the public regularly as they try to assure people that -- despite what some politicians, talk show hosts, and internet conspiracy theorists claim -- the U.S. election process is not rigged.

Dozens of court decisions and congressional and state legislative investigations have disproven claims that widespread fraud impacted the results of the 2020 election. However, distrust of those results have fueled threats directed at election officials across the country.

The FBI has been investigating packages -- some containing a mysterious white powder -- mailed to election officials in nearly two dozen states last month, including Iowa and Nebraska. The FBI has not yet announced any arrests.

Some of the false information about U.S. elections comes from foreign actors, according to the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA). CISA on Friday issued a new warning about Russia’s latest attempt to disrupt the voting process.

I heard of a few backing out of work at the last minute because they were concerned about the virus in 2020.
