Legislation to set up statewide rules for Uber and Lyft clears Louisiana House

Over objections from New Orleans lawmakers, a bill aimed at setting up uniform, statewide rules for Uber and Lyft won approval Wednesday in the Louisiana House.

The vote was 79-12 on House Bill 527 sponsored by House Transportation Committee Chairman Kenny Havard, R-St. Francisville.

Uber and Lyft are called ridesharing services and are accessible through an app.

Havard and other backers of the bill said Lyft and Uber now operate under a patchwork of regulations that vary from parish to parish, including New Orleans and Baton Rouge.
