Maine Senators propose PRINT Act, seeking to avert a newsprint cost crisis set about by new Trump tariffs

Thousands of newspapers in the U.S. may have to lay off staff, run syndicated stories over local content, or shutter completely because of new tariffs imposed by President Trump on Canadian uncoated groundwood paper — commonly known as “newsprint,” earlier this year.

Publishers are calling the tariffs an existential threat to newspapers — especially smaller local ones like you’re reading right now.

But Maine Senators Susan Collins and Angus King have proposed a bill that they hope will avert the crisis.

With a bipartisan coalition, Collins and King introduced the Protecting Rational Incentives in Newsprint Trade (PRINT) Act of 2018, which would suspend the new import taxes on cheaper Canadian paper, a longtime source for American newspaper publishers, while the Department of Commerce conducts an extensive study on the health and impact of the printing and publishing industry.
