http://bangordailynews.com/2012/04/09/news/bangor/private-east-west-highway-under-study-differs-from-federally-designated-corridor/
Thought this might be of interest to Maine DUers...they want to include a 2000 ft right of way for their 4/6 lane highway. I suspect that would be for some gas pipeline at a later date. While I think a East-West highway is not a bad idea, I don't see much value for Maine taxpayers to accept this...it will be a private toll road with limited access points...seems like a Newport to Coburn Gore highway would be of more value to the people of Maine.

(16,067 posts)That's the name we gave the proposal in eastern Colorado.
So far it hasn't happened. Yet.

(3,880 posts)So glad to hear from yhose knowledgeable fox posters! I remember your political member trying to sell the people of maine that god awful idea-seems it was a disaster in your state! and it was recalled or suspended!(maybe both) but the best part was this idiot knew it when he tried to sell it to us!
have anice day

(3,880 posts)Since I made my living for years working on millitary and super highways I feel I probably am more than qualified to speak on this subject. I have heard your negativity for years! And know better than to think a new highway doesn't increase commerce, land value and jobs! I can remember when cianbro was building box culverts on the interstate in pitsfield and clinton area! they evolved to be one of the largest contractors in Maine!
I heard your negativity when we were working on dow! look at Bangor today!I heard your negativity when I was working in the gravel pits in cumberland(now one of the highest land values in maine! I heard your negativity in falmouth(look at the price of homes their!)
but besides your not having a valid point the east west has been killed by the negative effect of those who are not qualified spreading the news for those that want to keep (the money, the power and the control for themselves) the status quo! you see the maine turnpike was built with private money! and though I doubt your older than me I'm sure even a negative person such as yourself has benefitted from its existence! and probably couldn't live so well if we closed it!
so think negativity has kept maine 40 years behind the rest of the country for years!
when is the last time you really looked at how much our neighbor (new brunswick) has moved foward in the last 50 years?
I know I won't change your mind-but I will speak mine!

(3,880 posts)might add: speaking of cianbro their super at the time(1963) who's last name escapes me
his first name was carl asked me if I had heard anything about the east west highway as their had been an article in one of maines paper! at the time the interstate was booming and rte#9 and rte# 6 were starting to be improved!
I might add that both rte#9 (the airline) and rte# 6 (topsfield to lincoln) have been improved and had been considered as possible rtes in the past!
both of these rtes are traveled by trailer trucks and logging trucks! believe me many lives would be saved with a 4 lane corridor out of washington county!

(37,540 posts)I've never commented on any of the issues you accuse me to be 'negative' about. I'm not convinced that this super highway will do anything other than to help connect Canadian provinces more efficiently. You can see that this new proposed route won't do much for Maine taxpayers or enhance the existing transportation system in Northern Maine.
Sure sounds like you have a dog in this fight, though.

(3,880 posts)THE ARGUMENT YOU MADE IS NOT NEW! IF YOU RESEARCH THE PROJECT YOU WILL HEAT THE SAME ARGUMENT! IF YOU RESEARCH THE FOUR LANE RTE#1 HIGHWAY BETWEEN PORTLAND AND BRUNSWICK YOU WILL SEE THE SAME EXCUSE- THATS WHY I ANSWERED YOUR POST.
MY ARGUMENT IS THE SAME AS IT WAS ! i HAVE NEVER WORKED ON A FOUR LANE HIGHWAY IN THE STATE OF MAINE THAT HAS NOT IMPROVED THE ECONOMY THROUGH WHICH IT PASSES!
luckyleftyme2
(3,880 posts)I HAVE NEVER WORKED ON A MAJOR ROAD CHANGE OR IMPROVEMENT PROJECT THAT HASN'T HELPED BUSINESS! BE IT TWO LANE OR 4!OR 6 LANES!
WHAT I HAVE SEEN IS POLITICIANS HALF INFORMED WASTE THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS
BECAUSE THEY COULDN'T SEE THE FORREST'S FOR THE TREES! AND STAND IN THE WAY OF PROGRESS THAT EVENTUALLY WAS BUILT AND PROVED THEM WRONG! ITS LIKE THE FAMILY THAT CAN'T AFFORD ANOTHER CHILD BUT SURVIVED JUST FINE WHEN IT CAME!
WE CAN'T AFFORD IT AND WE CAN'T MOVE FORWARD WITHOUT IT! THE ONLY THING WRONG WITH STANDING STILL IS THE REST OF THE WORLD MOVES ON WITHOUT YOU!
THINK ABOUT THAT! WE WENT FROM A STATE THAT HAD THE QUEEN CITY OF LUMBER EXPORTS,THE STANLEY STEAMER. THE LOMBARD HAULER,EAR MUFFS ETC. THE CAN DO
INVENTORS AND DOERS TO THE NEGATIVE YA CAN'T GET THAR FROM HEAAAR!
WE NEED OUR CANADIAN BROTHERS, WE NEED ALL OUR NEIGHBORS TO SAVE THE NORTHEAST! AS OUR FORREST PRODUCTS,POTATO MARKETS ETC. CHANGE WE NEED TO CHANGE WITH THEM-NOT FIGHT CHANGE AS SEEMS TO BE THE REASON WE ARE IN THE MESS WE HAVE TODAY! LOOK AT THE BOTTLED WATER INDUSTRY! 50 YEARS Ago it didn't exist like it does today!70 years ago their was no 4 lanes highways in Maine! mass rte 128 had a3rd lane (called a suicide lane by many) -change is American! -negativity breeds poverty! change breeds advancement and a viable economy!

(37,540 posts)LOL...you obviously have a lot more vested in road construction than I do. Sorry, I think this is a particularly bad idea and won't deliver any real economic benefit to the people. I'm sure it will make Cianbro and certain businesses a lot of money, but there are better East-West options that will have a broader positive impact on our economy. This route option benefits no one. Why? Because there are no people along the proposed route.
luckyleftyme2
(3,880 posts)the reason the route was picked probably was to disrupt as few homesteads as possible
while connecting to points along the way that feeder connections could be added as needed! the benefit is that businesses and people will support these connectors!
amazingly we can show this by growth graphs along the turnpike,I-95,I295,I-395 of course our older road system such as rte 1. I am sure the products that are now being
transported the long way around are being considered as well as future products that could be added.
Now I thought that when they decided to only build two lanes of I-95 north of east miltyknokett was foolish but many felt it wasn't needed right then! I knew that when it was built the cost would be much higher!(it was) so the nay's won and the tax payers lost! I feel this way about the east west! It will be eventually built-and the longer it is stalled the more expensive it will be. I might add many of the bridges along the six lane stretch of the maine turnpike were surveyed in 1973 -1975 by me! they now exist along with the six lane road way-what do you suppose the cost in 1995 was compared to 1975?
how many people were maimed or died during that 20 year delay? how much was added to your grocery price? hmmm there is a lot to think about when you say no! usually a no is very expensive!
I was born on the canadian border-many of my family members married canadians-yet their is still a little friction between them. but both sides shop in Calais and st.Stephens
and bitch about those dam canadians and those dam yankees! and their prices! must be human nature! like maine and newhampshire liquor prices!
Old and In the Way
(37,540 posts)this is not the case with this plan. All this plan does is benefit Cianbro and the Canadian transportation system by providing a shortcut expressway between NB and Quebec. Spin it any way you like, Lucky, but this is another deal where we socialize the environmental risks and degrade a tourist/recreational asset of a relatively pristine part of the State and privatize/export the profits to benefit someone else.

luckyleftyme2
(3,880 posts)well your certainly entitled to your opinion-esp since you post all over the country!
but I think the real people who will benefit in this economy is the man who needs a job-and the guy who ends up starting a new company ;whether it be a one man,one woman business or a multiple job business! and your idea is to kill it before it gets started-if I didn't know better I'd think your a very good friend of a family member of mine!
I guess the old cc camps during the depression, the ceta programs etc in your mind were just a waste of taxpayers money! and no one benefited from them! especially you!
But I know for a fact that quoddy project helped my family survive! as well as the roads in washington county;along with many of my childhood friends families! I know for a fact that the ceta program I was in charge of (it was on the front page of the bangor daily news) saved many people from going under! no I wasn't a ceta employee just in charge of a ceta project!
you see people like me help to make things happen! others just toot their horn and get in the way of progress!
how's that for a new years message!!!!!roflmao at a f--l
nothing personal!roflmao!

(37,540 posts)I'm all for smart business development in the State. I'm not for a big land giveaway that appears to primarily benefit Irving Oil, Canada, and Cianbro above everyone else. There are better EW options that the people of Maine can benefit from. This is not the answer.
luckyleftyme2
(3,880 posts)you certainly haven't presented an alternative-nor any fact to make a claim on!
are you a mainer? and did you not post in several states in the fox forums?
how about rifleman!hmmm I think we have been opposite sides before!
but I so respect your right to disagree providing you agree that such a rte# will open business prospects for jobs! but to disagree with no alternatives in my opinion is just not good for the future of our state!
you see in my town the majority want a natural gas connection on every street but they are running into stallers to keep the status quo! I'M sure you commented on my piece on this in regards to freeport! hmmm!

(37,540 posts)Your reading comprehension skills are no better than your written communication skills. I do get a chuckle at your futile attempts to insult, though.
luckyleftyme2
(3,880 posts)your ability to influence has proven a failure;and your rhetoric is as phony as your claim to be a democrat. By the way how's your fish tank doing? looks pretty murky to me! Oh well while in Bangor Saturday we heard some pretty interesting news about the east -west highway and the future investors!
So like you say fox poster thier, thar they their is change in the air! Also the airways.
the square wheel of the old guard is becoming more of a useless tool than the spare tire in the trunk that holds no air!
As "alec" is exposed those who ruled by fear and negativity are finding out they have no where near the numbers needed to rule! The budget vote showed that knowledge given to the voters will send a message far greater than the best minds of deceit can overcome.
my god did the vote send the message all was not for naught!
roflmao --- knowing I may just see the east-west become a reality!
VETO MY ASS -HOT AIR CAN'T MAINTAIN THE STATUS QUO!

(3,880 posts)Did you run out of capital letters?
LOL...you obviously have a lot more vested in road construction than I do. Sorry, I think this is a particularly bad idea and won't deliver any real economic benefit to the people. A perfect example of why we can't keep up with the rest of the world!
people move to where new opportunities open! they leave when opportunity dies!
I've spent my life working on change -from highways, pipelines, airports, military bases, hospitals, fallout shelters power plants ,shopping centers and housing projects.
their has always been a"old and in the way" person who has fought tooth and nail to stop these projects! And a perfect example of why the east west will be built is the payne road (maine mall for one) or I-95 Through bangor(the shopping centers ) because the Investors know development will follow!
so I find that capitals get attention ,naysayers are simply a way of life and losers
know they are fighting a losing battle once questioned on their negativity. But the worse part is they are an object that takes time to overcome;and time is opportunity lost for those who need it most!
