Bangor School District to put recurring operational referendum on November ballot

BANGOR, Wis. (WKBT) -- The Bangor School District Board of Education has voted to place an operational referendum on the November Ballot.

The board voted to place the referendum question at their meeting on Aug. 14. If passed, the referendum would renew the current amount of $900,000 per year, which voters previously approved in 2021, starting during the 25-26 school year.

The Bangor School District has operated with referendum support since 2007. The district's current operational budget is $11,000,000 per year. According to a press release, losing the additional $900,000 per year would lead to larger class sizes, deferred maintenance and "loss of opportunities" for students.

Since 2007, the district has asked the community for operational support every three years. These referendums have been non-recurring, meaning the funding approved by voters only lasts for a certain period of time.

from the article::::: An operational referendum provides school districts additional, voter approved, tax levy authority.

While the goal may be laudable, I disagree with these taxing authorities set by referendums. Every taxing authority should be set by one entity, City council/commission or whatever. If you have 3 extra taxing authorities and each one increases your taxes by 3%, each one can say: well we did not increase your taxes by 9%. It is a matter of accountability. I would prefer one taxing authority that is accountable.

The schools and other purposes should go through the one entity.
