7. my lesson in killeen texas 1959

I had the privledge of being sta. at fort hood texas in 1959; I was in civillian clothing with 2 friends form my unit(we were strac armored infantry) 1600 of us were chosen to stay together for two years (an experiment that proved sucessfull ) . the bar was high-iq above 115(required for officer training,physical abilityand prior experince with track vechicles. thats not the point but church is.
we had spent 24 of our 32 weeks of training out doors in the lousianna and texas sun.I am of irish,english and french heritage
had black hair and tanned deeply! Anyway one of the guys was babtist so we went to a baptist church for services!well to make long story short a bible stomping fool made the mistake of saying we don't allow your kind in here!(he thought I was of colored blood) my friend said why and he pushed him off the stairs! that was his last mistake for at least 6 weeks as I broke his arm when I flipped him; when the police came so did the mps! when asked what happened we told our commanding officer who later became a well known general and he explained the rules! when on the base their is no predudices allowed; when off base I can't prevent it! then he said if we ever get in a battle I want you 3 taking my back!
when asked how I felt (I was 22 at the time) I said how can anyone call himself a christian when he preaches and practices racial hate! AND I STILL BELIEVE THAT! AND WILL FIGHT TO DEFEND ANY MAN'S RIGHT TO WORSHIP ANYWAY HE WANTS!
DON'T EVER TRY TO PULL THE BIBLE BIT ON ME -WHEN YOU THINK A MAN'S COLOR OR BELIEF IS BELOW YOURS! OR NOT WORTH DEFENDING.
