Calvert County Government, Calvert County, Maryland

It’s Native American Heritage Month! This November, we’re highlighting the Piscataway Conoy tribe, a tribe that has been calling the area home since time immemorial.

Pronounced “pis-KAH-tuh-way kuh-NOI,” the Piscataway Conoy tribe, was officially recognized by the state of Maryland in 2012. However, archaeological finds and present-day tribal members both confirm that Native American presence in the area stretches back for thousands of years.

“Piscataway Conoy” translates to “where the rivers blend,” and is one of the many ways the traditional language lives on today. While the conversational language has been lost through time, the language itself is not extinct. It lives on in words and place names we use every day, such as “Patuxent,” “Choptico,” “Mattawoman,” “Accokeek” and “Chesapeake.”
