Walsh cites Herald for gun-buy push

Mayor Martin J. Walsh, acknowledging that his gun buyback push is in desperate need of promotion, thanked a Herald front-page report that revealed the program took just one firearm off the street this year amid a new surge in summertime violence.
I read about it in the paper today. Thank you, guys, for doing that, Walsh told a Herald reporter yesterday. We need promotion of it. Thats what I was talking about (Thursday), is that we didnt promote it the way we did last year. We kept the program in place and, believe or not, I think (the) story will be helpful to us.
The Herald reported yesterday that the much-touted gun buyback program had taken in the lone firearm since January after sweeping up 410 last year after its March 2014 launch.
The sharp decline has left the Boston Police Department on pace to seize well below the more than 1,060 guns it did last year. But police officials said the drop shouldnt reflect on the work of police to clear guns in other ways.
