Boston Herald being sold to Gatehouse, files for Chapter 11

The Boston Herald is being sold to GateHouse Media, the newspaper’s publisher, Patrick J. Purcell, told employees Friday afternoon, and also filed for federal bankruptcy protection.

The Boston-based tabloid said the sale would allow the paper to continue to operate while it works out its debts, according to a story published on the Herald’s website. The sale is subject to court approval.

The Herald has 240 employees, more than 120 of whom work in the newsroom, the story said. At its peak in 2000, it had 900 employees.
