UMass students vote to buy themselves a $50 million student union renovation

AMHERST -- Dwight D. Eisenhower was president and Wham-O began selling Frisbees when the Student Union opened in 1957 at the University of Massachusetts.

Back then, there were only 4,800 students using the building. Although there are now about 30,000 students who pass through it, the building has remained unchanged.

But soon that will change.

Students this week voted to pay half the $50 million renovation cost by increasing student activity fees $100 annually. The UMass-Amherst campus has agreed to fund the other half.

The Student Union referendum passed 1,246-1,012, with about 10 percent of the study body voting, about average for a student vote, said Student Government President Anthony Vitale.
