Family decries high school 'subculture of racism' against Cape Verdean student

Darius Silva, 17, who is of Cape Verdean descent and has brown skin, has been called plenty of racial slurs by other students and, he said, by a football coach since he transferred to the nearly all-white Uxbridge High School last fall from Cumberland, Rhode Island.

He says his experience is not unique among the few nonwhite students in the Blackstone Valley town of roughly 14,000.
