Detroit elections officials say they are seeing evidence of high voter turnout

Detroit — City Clerk Janice Winfrey said her office expects a 53% voter turnout in the city this fall, which would represent an increase from 2020 and could seemingly benefit Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris.

Speaking to reporters during a press conference Thursday at Huntington Place, Winfrey, along with her director of elections, said a 50% turnout "is not good enough" and outlined some of the "rigorous" security measures that will be in place to count the vote and keep workers safe on Election Day.

"We're going to continue to do our job at a high level of professionalism and to the letter of the law," said Winfrey.

Winfrey’s turnout projection is significant because of the importance of Detroit, a Democratic stronghold, in any statewide election. Most polls show that presidential candidates Harris and Republican nominee Donald Trump are deadlocked in this key swing state. Based on past elections, Democrats tend to win the state when there is a relative high voter turnout in Detroit.
