Mary Sheffield announcement expected to kick off crowded race for Detroit mayor
Detroit City Council President Mary Sheffield is expected to announce Tuesday she wants to be Detroit's next mayor, kicking off what is shaping up to be a competitive race now that Mayor Mike Duggan is not running again.
Sheffield is hosting an evening event at a Corktown union hall where she will make a special announcement regarding the future of her career in public service, according to an email announcement. Her spokeswoman didnt respond to requests for comment Monday.
Her father, the Rev. Horace Sheffield III, posted last month on his Facebook page a comment that said Mayor Mary along with a video of his daughter receiving applause during a church event.
Sheffield is one of five people who have formed exploratory committees for mayor. Exploratory committees allow potential candidates to begin fundraising and hiring staff for a possible run for office. The next step is often an official declaration of candidacy.
