(Detroit Free Press) U.S. Sen. Gary Peters stunned and staggered Michigan’s political crowd last week with an email announcing he will not seek re-election in 2026, just months after he finally became Michigan’s senior senator.

How to win

For Democrats not just to win in Michigan, but to have a serious chance at regaining authority in Washington, they must build a credible, constructive opposition to Trump’s actions.

And that is where Peters could prove most useful in the next two years.

Peters can help focus and center counter actions to Trump and his anticipated drastic, dramatic and destructive attempts to gut government.
