Detroit megachurch pastor takes steps to run for mayor
The Rev. Solomon Kinloch Jr., the 51-year-old pastor of a Detroit-based church with more than 35,000 members, has created a "Solomon Kinloch for Mayor" exploratory committee with Wayne County Wednesday, according to county records.
On Wednesday night, the pastor of Triumph Church is scheduled to hold an event at the Fox Theater in downtown Detroit where he is widely expected to declare his candidacy. Kinloch declined to comment.
Kinloch becomes the eighth person to declare a candidacy or form an exploratory committee for Detroit's upcoming mayoral race. An exploratory committee allows a potential political candidate to begin to fundraise and hire a staff. The committee is one of the first public moves before officially declaring a run for political office.
The Aug. 9 primary will narrow down the candidates to the top two vote-getters, who would then face off in the general election in November.
