Shri Thanedar claims victory in Democratic race for congressional seat in Detroit

State Rep. Shri Thanedar claimed victory on Wednesday morning in the likely decisive Democratic primary in the open 13th Congressional District seat anchored in Detroit as he main opponent, state Sen. Adam Hollier, conceded the race.

If Thanedar's claim holds as expected, it will almost certainly mean that Detroit, which has the largest Black majority of any major city in the U.S., will not have a Black representative in Congress for the first time since 1955. The Associated Press, which the Free Press uses to help call races, had not yet declared a winner as of 9 a.m.

The Wayne County Clerk's office, however. reported as of 8:30 a.m. that all 430 precincts in the district had reported, a number the AP said accounted for more than two-thirds of the total vote. Thanedar, of Detroit, an Indian immigrant and entrepreneur who poured millions of his own money into the race, led with led with 28%, compared to 23% for Hollier and 17% for Focus: HOPE CEO Portia Roberson in the newly drawn 13th Congressional District.

Thanedar led Hollier by about 3,800 votes, 22,302 to 18,513 and was well ahead of the other candidates in the nine-person field. If his win is finalized, he will face Republican Martell Bivings, who has worked as a liaison with the Detroit Economic Growth Corporation, but in this solidly Democratic-leaning district, Thanedar is considered almost certain to win.

I wanted Adam to win and worked hard for him. As I said all along though, whichever Dem won they would vote for the things I care about. I had no idea that Detroit will not have black representation going back to 1955. Our districts were drawn for the first time by a committee. They split the city of Detroit up. I lost Debbie Dingell as my rep, but Shri will vote for the Dem issues.
