Wayne State to offer free tuition to students whose families make under $70,000 annually

(Detroit Free Press) Wayne State University will offer free tuition to all Michigan students whose families make under $70,000 a year, the school announced Monday morning.

The move was touted by school officials and politicians as a way to increase higher education opportunities for students across the state and particularly in metro Detroit.

Increasing the social mobility for students has long been a goal, President Roy Wilson said. He noted there needed to be bigger efforts.

"We can't just work around the edges," he said during the announcement. "We have to do something bold. We're stepping it up." ..............(more)

That's how it should be.

I will say this: more kids leaving high school need to consider the junior college/community college option before going off to a pricy four year school. And even the state universities are pretty pricey these days.

5. Good school. Great policy.

I attended both the University of Michigan (undergrad) and Wayne State (grad) over 30 years ago. At the time, I was surprised that the quality of the education provided was very similar. What was different was the student level competition (the University of Michigan having, on average, higher performing students). I sometimes struggled to pass classes at UM when graded on a curve, but never struggled to get an "A" at WSU, even in classes considered difficult.

I believe UM also has a free or reduced tuition policy now for students based on need that have been accepted. Glad that my home State of Michigan still values higher education.

6. Good going for my Alma Mater.

I received my M.A. in French from WSU in 1978. I had started in 1972. Back then I think the actual full-time graduate tuition was about $600. Mine was reimbursed through my job with the City of Detroit.
