Two more candidates enter Michigan's U.S. Senate race

The race to replace U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow has gained two more entrants, as Republican Michael Hoover and former Democratic state Rep. Leslie Love declared candidacies.

As a state legislator, Love’s district in the House covered both Detroit and Redford Township. While the city is predominantly Black, Redford is majority white, and Love argued the diversity leaves her well-suited to represent the entirety of the state.

“I have lived a Michigan experience. I’ve been to the Tulip Festival, I’ve been to Walpole Island for the Native American festival,” Love said in an interview. “I’ve done these things because I’ve lived and embrace the culture of Michigan.”

She was the first Black woman, appointed by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, to serve on Michigan’s Natural Resources Commission. A hunter and novice angler, she said her love of the outdoors broadens her appeal.
