Minnesota Legislature: $800 million public works bill falls short in House

The Minnesota House failed to pass an $800 million public works bill on Wednesday that would have provided a smaller-than-usual pot of money for roads, bridges, sewer and water systems, college buildings and flood-control projects across the state.

Lawmakers voted 70-62 for the bonding bill, but that was short of the 81 votes needed — a three-fifths majority — to increase the state’s debt.

That doesn’t mean the construction projects are dead for the year. Lawmakers still have time to revive the measure before the session ends.

The bill fell short on a bipartisan vote. Ten of the 77 House Republicans voted against the bill, and only three of the 57 Democrats voted “yes.”
