Donald Trump has already taken notice of the Minnesota meltdown.

Democratic infighting is jeopardizing the party’s hold on one of the nation’s most competitive congressional districts, providing the GOP with a rare pickup opportunity in November as it struggles to hold on to its 23-seat House majority.

The White House is already taking notice of the contest in northeastern Minnesota’s 8th District, sensing a chance to claw back a Democratic-held seat in an otherwise grim election cycle. St. Louis County Commissioner Pete Stauber, the Republican running in the largely rural district, said President Donald Trump called him unexpectedly on March 16, saying he “wanted to offer up his support, and anything that he could do to help us win the election, he would do it.”

A National Republican Congressional Committee spokeswoman confirmed the president’s call to Stauber.

That’s why some Democrats in the 8th District are raising alarms. Joan Peterson, a Duluth activist, said her biggest concern is that Democrats must get past a sometimes “angry” primary “to come together and pick somebody who we believe will win.”

She said, “I’m quite worried about how this is going to come out.”

Former Minnesota Gov. Arne Carlson, a moderate Republican who endorsed Clinton in 2016, said, “The Trump coalition of the disaffected is potent, and the Republicans have considerable strength in rural Minnesota, and my guess from a congressional perspective is that they have a very good chance of picking up the 8th. I personally think they will.”

3. No one loves a primary, least of all the DFL. But the word choices in this article --

"disarray," "meltdown" -- overstate the issue. Sure, it's a shitshow. But shitshows gave us Mark Dayton and, for that matter, Jim Oberstar. Having said that, there are definitely DFL candidates that could lose this district for a long, long time.

4. Dems are strong in Minnesota......

As with the 8th CD, that means a strong field of candidates. Republicans should be concerned that Democrats are putting up good candidates.

Down here in the 1st CD, we have a Slate of good candidates as well. Dan Feehan appears to be the strongest of the bunch who will likely be the DFL Candidate to take on Carla Nelson or Jim Hagedorn. This is Hagedorn's 3rd try. Both he and Carla Nelson a State Senator from Rochester, are both Trumpers.

There was an interesting letter about them in our paper, the Post Bulletin, about their silence about all the shit that has gone down with Trump since last fall. Both have embraced Trump in all his policies. Dan Feehan an Iraq war veteran, worked in the Obama administration for a time. He is also an area raised man with a very god head on his shoulders. He knows the issues and is aware of all the Republican lies.

What Democrats need to stay tuned on are the issues that affect every day people. Health Care, the Farm economy, Education, fair taxation , good paying jobs, good wages, etc. The fact that Republicans want to gut Social Security and Medicare, will punish the growing population of Seniors in the 1st CD. Not to mention in the rest of Minnesota.
