CNNs two-part series, Escape from the Mayo Clinic, told the story of a caper straight out of a movie plot.
There was Alyssa Gilderhus, an 18-year-old high school senior from Sherburn, who was recovering from a Christmas Day aneurysm at Rochesters Mayo Clinic. There was her mother, Amber Engebretson, who reportedly had been badgering doctors with questions and suggestions for Alyssas care until she was barred from the hospital.
Requests for transfer to a new facility had been denied, and behind the scenes, Mayo had been filing for emergency guardianship for Alyssa. Looking back, her family says if something hadnt been done, they might have lost her forever.
So the scheme was hatched. They feigned a visit from Alyssas frail Grandma Betty, who was too weak to make the trip to the hospital room. Then they wheeled Alyssa down to the parking lot, where her mother was waiting with a van, and swept her inside. She was finally going home, her mother promised. They sped away.

(3,425 posts)I am sure the hospital is not blameless in this sad episode, CNN seemed to have used that fact to get a story. Are they trying to compete with National Enquirer in a race to the bottom of journalist integrity. Shame on them.

(117,233 posts)I don't have cable so I don't know about the underlying story, but I ran across the article while I was making my rounds and thought that others might be interested to get another perspective.
It's been awhile since we last chat. How are things going with you?

(117,233 posts)I start out the year with a case of scabies, then in April I was bit by one of the cats on the back of my calf. I had a staph infection and the doctor put me in the hospital, but the ultrasound didn't show any reason to have surgery. Other than that, I'm trying to survive the Texas heat--if I'm lucky I only have to change shirts once a day.

On edit: I watched the interview with her and she seems totally lucid plus another hospital found her to be competent.
Egg on Mayo's face.
