Car registration renewal

In the past several years I would go to the County service office and pay there in person. Some years ago I even had to get new plates. And last year was horrible. The "side effects" of full employment resulted in only half the stations filled.

Anyway... a few weeks ago the Ride column in the strib reported that car owners could pay online and get a tag, or a confirmation that they could carry.

Well, I now got the notice, in the yellow envelope. So I will take my chances and mail the payment. All of $64.25..

Around here, just about every government office is closed, including the DMV, so I would pay online and get the confirmation to print out and show if needed.

FWIW, the local courthouse is closed, and I can't pay traffic fines online, so they won't get my "not inspected" fine until they open again.

even if someone showed up in the office to eyeball things before they went out, or stuff an envelope, that's still a lot less time than it takes to open your envelope, check that the form is filled out correctly, endorse the check, and get it to the bank.

And if the office has its own depositing equipment, someone has to be there to scan it.

Metro areas require emissions testing. DEQ sites are closed. Driver licenses require photos. DMV is also closed. The grace period is not defined, but is likely to be 30 days past the re-opening of facilities.

Not that I'm driving much anyhow, or that I'd be stopped for driving with expired tags if I did.

Just checked the DVS site and it does say that one can mail it

Mail your vehicle registration by sending the bottom half of your renewal notice with your check or money order made payable to DVS Renewal to:

allows for every easy on-line registration renewal. You can even get a new plate that way if you want.

I haven't been to the DMV for registration renewal since I first registered my car here in 2008.

My license is up for renewal in August. I'm sure that if they're still not open for that then, cops won't be worried about expired licenses. Or they'll figure out a way to auto-renew, maybe send out a copy of the previous license with a new expiration date on it. Will have to wait and see.

in September, 2018. No problem at all getting it registered here.

But yes, this state has been nearly impossible when it comes to getting the real ID drivers licenses.

What I'm personally incensed about is they want my SS#, even for a regular license now. My SS card states very clearly that it is not to be used for ID purposes. I'm thinking that when I go to renew my DL, I'll photocopy that, with all but the last 4 numbers blacked out, and see if they'll accept that. They will probably refuse, and I'm not entirely sure what I'll do next.

I always have a passport, so I'm happy with a non-real ID license, but giving them my SS#?

I did get one last summer without a lot of hassle. The rules the state is following for them were set by the Feds so Minnesota can't be blamed. But it never ceases to amaze me that it's easier to get a passport than this goofy license.

I don't think you even need to give that to get a passport.

However, I got my very first one back in 1970, and have always just renewed and never had to fill out new paperwork, so maybe back then I did have to give my SS#. But somehow, I doubt that.

Heck, even the Medicare people have taken our SS# off our Medicare cards.

Again, if I only had to give it for a Real ID DL, I'd simply opt for the permission to drive version. But here in NM, they want it for either version of a DL.

My current DL is up for renewal in August. If I can renew it without submitting a SS#, I'll be very happy. Maybe by the time that one expires I'll be ready to give up driving altogether.

It also gave me a receipt I printed out, just in case they didn't arrive in time. (Mine are due the end of the month, I renewed on the 3rd).

Now I just need to remember to take them off the kitchen table and down to the car.

I just went ahead but, really, 3.95 for the amount of $64.25 - 6%

Will reconsider next month for the second, newer car..

I used my debit card. Wonder whether i should have just provided the checking account number. They already knew which bank I am using - from income tax, I assume.

Sigh..

Ontario extends driver's licence, OHIP card renewals

Ontarians have won a reprieve on renewing their driver’s licences, health cards and licence plate stickers during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The extension means people whose government cards expire now or in the near future won’t have to renew them until an unspecified date approved by the chief medical officer of health.

Extensions are being granted for Ontario driver’s licences, driving instructor licences, Ontario Photo Card, Enhanced Driver’s Licence, and also the requirement to register a vehicle or address change.

Evictions in Ontario are also on hold during the coronavirus crisis.

“We don’t want you to worry about your job,” Ford said. “We also don’t want you to worry about how you’re going to make rent this month. That’s why I’ve directed that all eviction orders be suspended until further notice.”

Down in the metro (Minneapolis/St. Paul) it's not quite as bad.

If Canada wants to annex us, I think many of us would be ok with it. We'd get healthcare!
