Tensions rise over PPE availability at United Hospital. One nurse is fired and the union plans a protest.


A United Hospital emergency room registered nurse was fired Friday, the culmination of a two-month contention over the availability of personal protection equipment.

Cliff Willmeng, 50, of Minneapolis was told he was being fired because he “violated hospital policy and expectations regarding uniforms and hospital scrubs as well as his duty to follow the directions of his leader.”

Willmeng said he was trying to keep his family safe by not wearing his personal scrubs home from work where he comes in contact with COVID-19-infected patients.

“We’re talking about a hospital that left its staff grossly unprepared for a pandemic,” he said.
