MN 2nd Congressional District election postponed

Until February 9th due to death of Legal Marijuana Now party's candidate.

While his family and supporters have my sympathy, this is Angie Craig's district and what makes me nervous is how unreliable DFLers are about showing up for special elections.

1. It shouldn't. The party can put someone else. As we did in 2002

After the tragic death of Wellstone.

Who makes these decisions?

At least she will have her seat until then.

2. The law was changed after Wellstone's death

to move the election for that seat to February if a candidate died less than 79 days (I believe that's the number I heard) before the election.

I think this was a good move. There were people who had filed absentee in 2002 and whose votes votes were not counted in the Mondale/Coleman race. I never understood why it was decided it couldn't be assumed that someone who voted for Wellstone would have voted for Mondale when it was assumed that someone who voted for Coleman over Wellstone would still prefer Coleman over Mondale.

I'm not sure if she will have her seat between January 3 (when new terms start) and February 9, that's a question I'd like to hear an answer for.

3. Yes, I understand. The only thing is: it is supposed to be "a major party"

Really? Two dope proposing parties? No Green Party? No Libertarian Party?

but they got 5% of the vote in 2018 and that's all it takes to be a "major" party in Minnesota.

That might be something the legislature might want to look at it seems like a pretty low bar.
