Calls for the impeachment of President Donald Trump are premature until investigations in Congress and by Special Counsel Robert Mueller develop a clearer picture of Russias involvement in the 2016 elections, U.S. Sen. Claire McCaskill said Thursday.
Speaking to reporters during a telephone news conference, McCaskill, D-Mo., was asked whether it is time to consider impeachment, something many Democratic colleagues in the House and Senate are demanding.
The prosecutor in me says absolutely not, McCaskill said. McCaskill was prosecuting attorney of Jackson County from 1993 to 1998.
Events have moved quickly in Washington this week, from revelations Monday that Trump had disclosed highly classified information to Russian diplomats who visited the White House to the appointment of Mueller late Wednesday. McCaskill praised Mueller as a respected professional but said his appointment should not stop congressional investigations.
