WHICH SENIOR TAX CREDIT MEASURE IS ON THE SALINE COUNTY BALLOT?

The deadline has passed for local governments to submit ballot measures for the Nov. 5th General Election, and nearly 500 Saline County voters are asking whether their signatures have made a difference.

Several organizers of a petition calling for voters to weigh in on a property tax credit for Saline County residents aged 62 and older appeared at a special meeting of the Saline County Commission at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 27. Commissioners Stephanie Gooden and Becky Plattner acknowledged receipt of the petition and said that it would be “processed in accordance with state statute.” Commissioners then adjourned the special meeting, taking no further action. Under the provisions of Senate Bills 190 and 756, the commission would need to place the measure on the ballot upon receipt of the petition.

Saline County Clerk Brittni Burton tells KMMO News that no documentation concerning the petition was received by her office from the commission before the 5 p.m. certification deadline. The commission had already adopted an order August 14th that put the measure on the ballot. The language adopted by the commission is different than that used by petition organizers.

Burton also noted that clerks’ offices around the state are awaiting resolution of multiple pending court cases on several issues before releasing certified ballot language or sample ballots. The courts have until Sept. 10th to issue orders adding or withdrawing items from any ballot in the state.
