and leave nail imprints while black (brown) bears have retractable claws and leave none. Don't ask how I know this (mine was a grizzly; this looks like a black)

grizzlies have very long claws that leave a long strike in the mud. Black bears have curved claws that leave a hole, like in this picture, close to the toe pad indentations. Black bears climb trees regularly, grizzlies do rarely.

Hey, is that a gov't issue pen?
