Bridgewater man is latest sentenced in Genovese crime family roundup in NJ
An associate of the Genovese organized crime family was sentenced in Morristown on Monday to three years of probation for his role in an illegal check cashing operation that netted millions in profit.
Abel Rodrigues, of Bridgewater, pleaded guilty to third-degree unlicensed check cashing, in the latest fallout from "Operation Fistful," a sweeping investigation into mafia loansharking, gambling and money laundering in New York and New Jersey.
The Attorney General’s Office recommended a term of probation and 364 days in county jail for Rodrigues. In lieu of jail time, Judge Donald Collester in Morris Superior Court imposed 200 hours of community service and a $15,000 criminal fine.
Six New Jersey men were given sentences ranging from probation to 10 years in prison in September for participating in criminal schemes linked to the family.
