Christie issues executive order to use general fund money for emergency road work

With no end in sight to the political standoff over transportation funding, Governor Christie issued an executive order Wednesday to use money from the state’s general fund to continue financing emergency work on New Jersey’s roads, bridges and mass transit network.

The fund is “days away from exhausting” the last of its money, Christie said in a statement.

“No evident progress has been made by the Legislature to pass a single, viable bill,” Christie said. “Until they do so, the State must use money from the General Fund for emergency road, bridge, and mass transportation work.”

For their part, legislators sound just as exasperated with the governor. Last week, Stephen Sweeney, the Democratic state Senate president, told The Record’s editorial board that he believes Christie is stalling on a deal until after the November election. And on Tuesday, Assembly Speaker Vincent Prieto, also a Democrat, struck back at Christie, a Republican.
