Endangered Swainson's hawks remain at NMSU
LAS CRUCES - With the start of the fall semester at New Mexico State University earlier this week, there was a whirlwind of activity Friday in the central area of the main campus.
As late morning classes ended, the streets and sidewalks were full of NMSU students, faculty, staff and visitors at the intersection of Stewart Street and Williams Avenue. People were talking or sending text messages on their cellphones or were plugged into their mobile listening devices. Small groups talked to each other as they headed toward nearby parking lots and buildings.
At first glance, most them didn't appear to be aware of the temporary signs that had been posted near three of the four corners at the Stewart Street and Williams Avenue intersection. The signs were there to warm passersby that Swainson's hawks, nesting in trees east of Rentfrow Gym, might swoop on unsuspecting people if the hawks sensed people were getting too close to their young.
Painted on sidewalks near the Stewart Street and Willliams Avenue intersection were yellow symbols of a hawk and an umbrella, apparently for people looking at the ground where they walked.
