Contentious Trump billboard latest move in sign war in Silver City

This billboard off of Cain Drive has drawn criticism from nearby residents and could violate town zoning law.

A perennial billboard on a property along Cain Drive has caused quite a commotion in recent months. While town staff and Indian Hills residents say the billboard violates the Silver City sign code, the property owner responsible for the sign questions whether the objections are political or aesthetic.

In 2004, Lynn Geyer erected two structures to hold billboards on his property, which straddles Silver City’s northern limit. Geyer said he has used them for various reasons over the years: holidays, local politics and now national. In the midst of the highly charged political climate surrounding this year’s presidential election, Geyer chose to present his own views with a “Veterans for Trump” sign spread across one of the structures.

Geyer’s sign has ruffled feathers among neighborhood residents, as evidenced by formal complaints to the town, statements in public meetings, letters to the editor, and even direct vandalism to the sign itself.

Ignoring the politics, characteristics of the sign do appear to violate several sections of the town’s sign code regulating the size and placement of signs in general and the timing of political signs. According to the code, signs the size of Geyer’s cannot be placed in residential zones of the town, and separate from that restriction, political signs can only be displayed within 60 days of an election. While time flies, November is still further away than that.
