In election year, New Mexico voter registration accelerates

Knocking on doors in west Albuquerque, Ronnie Martinez knows just a few voters could make all the difference to him in the November election.

During the last seven months, more than 1,600 people have registered to vote in a sprawling district the Democrat and retired firefighter is campaigning to represent in the state House of Representatives. That’s three times the number of voters who decided the last election, when Martinez lost by about 500 votes to Republican David Adkins.

“I’ve been knocking on doors for about a year and a half,” Martinez says. “My goal is to flip District 29 from red to blue. So I’m trying to register as many voters as possible.”

With retail politicking, the help of registrars in his neighborhood, interest in the presidential race and the launch of online registration, District 29 has seen the largest spike in registered voters of any House district in the state.
