Health insurers propose rate increases in New Mexico

Insurance providers for New Mexico’s health exchange have proposed rate increases ranging from about 20 percent to 85 percent starting in 2018, though the requests are likely to be revised before final approval.

Details of the rate proposals are now posted on the website of the New Mexico Office of the Superintendent of Insurance, the agency that evaluates whether premiums are justified and checks that plans provide essential health benefits.

Those wishing to review the requests or comment can go to nmhealthratereview.com.

Heather Widler, a spokeswoman for the state insurance office, said the requests are the first attempt by insurance carriers to gauge the 2018 marketplace and will change after companies assess the competition. The first revisions are due July 10.
