Lapel video indicates there were 17 shots in fatal Santa Fe police shooting
SANTA FE SWAT officers from the Santa Fe Police Department fired 17 shots 16 of them apparently from a single officer at a man who had barricaded himself inside an apartment and was throwing homemade explosives at officers last week, according to lapel video released by the department Tuesday.
State Police have also confirmed the identities of the two officers who fired their weapons.
Police shot 24-year-old Anthony Benavidez at the Tuscany at St. Francis apartment complex near St. Francis Drive and Siringo Road the morning of July 19. Benavidez had barricaded himself inside the apartment that he was evicted from the day before, had stabbed a social worker who was there to help get him out of the apartment and had thrown two homemade explosives at officers.
The video shows they tried to get in through a window and shot Benavidez after shouting commands for him to get his hands up and come out.
