What do you have on the front of your car?
New Mexico is one of 19 states that does not require a front license plate, leaving room for plenty of custom plates bearing the names of automotive dealers, the brands of carmakers, the logos of sports teams and universities and all manner of slogans.
Plenty of New Mexicans do not have anything at all affixed to their front bumper.
But the states dubious distinction as having the countrys highest rates of automotive theft and property crime is leading legislators to rethink that long-running policy.
The House Transportation Committee approved legislation earlier this week that would require vehicle owners to get license plates for their front bumpers, with some exceptions.
Backers argue House Bill 158 would make it easier for law enforcement to identify vehicles.

(10,829 posts)of the car, and whatever metal is under the plastic bumper. It's a pretty much solid metal reflector.
The laser guns are what use the front license plates. License plates are highly reflective, and give a speed reading over twice as far away as a painted bumper. In states that have no front plate requirement, the armed tax collectors, sorry I meant "cops and highway patrol", are trained to aim at your headlights because they are the most reflective.
From what I've read, a black or dark colored car with retracting headlights is most difficult to get a speed reading. Cars like an old Pontiac Fiero, or Firebird.
