Democrat Michelle Lujan Grisham has expanded her lead over Republican Steve Pearce in a high-profile New Mexico governors race that has become increasingly pugnacious in recent weeks, a new Journal Poll found.
Fifty-three percent of likely general election voters surveyed last week said they would vote or had already voted for Lujan Grisham, while 43 percent said they would support Pearce. The remaining voters surveyed would not say which candidate they planned to vote for or were undecided.
The new poll found Lujan Grishams lead over Pearce has specifically increased in recent weeks among female voters and independents, or those who decline to affiliate with a political party.
Lujan Grisham, who lives in Albuquerque and was a state Cabinet secretary under three different governors, won a bruising three-way primary election in June, with roughly two-thirds of the votes cast in the race.

(3,579 posts)The corrosive influence of Tejas is the only real explanation for why District 2 is Red. As a Texan now living in NM, I believe that turning District 2 Blue will be a lot easier than turning Texas, but will require the same methodology: convincing good people that their transplanted neighbors, in spite of their bloviating and over-confidence, are haughty, insecure nihilists that think politics is a team sport instead of being the world you have to live in. My Texas roots help me when I argue against believing and supporting these Texas transplants. But, the progress is painfully slow.
Still, I appreciate your optimism and will cling to this hope for as long as possible as motivation to continue the fight.

(3,579 posts)Lujan-Grisham is inheriting an environment where the Republican brand is toxic, due to both Trump and our two term Repub governor.
Eight years ago, Martinez won because the outgoing Dem governor, Bill Richardson, was seen as detached and blamed for a suffering economy that was clearly driven by W, rather than Richardson. She was also riding the Tea Party wave of 2010.
She basically has been a worthless governor.
Our only Red district today is District 2, where I live. This Southern district is filled with Texas transplants. The seat is open because the worthless Repub Trump-loving scum is now running for governor, which he will lose (thank God). This has left the seat open. The Democrat is only 1% behind, which is a statistical tie. With a lot of effort, money and a little luck, she will pull off a win and our state will be all Democrats in Congress with a Democratic Governor and a Democratic State Senate.
