EFFECTIVE APRIL 3, 2019
Due to excessive bank fees, we will no longer accept Visa® credit cards.
We will gladly continue to accept Visa® debit cards, plus all other major credit and debit cards.
Why will Smiths no longer accept Visa® credit cards?
Smiths, a division of The Kroger Co., is charged excessive bank fees when Customers use Visa® credit cards at checkout. To help keep your grocery prices low, weve decided not to accept Visa® credit cards.
What payments will I be able to use at Smiths?
We will gladly accept Visa® debit cards, including Health Savings Account debit cards. Plus Mastercard, American Express and Discover credit cards and debit cards. And as always, you can pay with cash or check.
How do I know if my card is a debit?
If your card can be used as debit, look for the word debit on the front of the cardtypically near the issuers logo. Debit cards are typically linked to a checking, savings or prepaid account.

(26,773 posts)I pay cash for most things. Definitely groceries.
I find I can monitor my spending much better that way.

(34,661 posts)from all our Smith's. They are the number one Supermarket Chain in Nevada. This is going to leave one hell of a mark on their bottom line. BTW,Every Credit Union in Nevada uses a Visa Credit or Debit Card.
BTW,Winco Super markets are much cheaper and they are Employee owned.

(34,661 posts)it is the principle of not excepting a certain charge Card. Worked the Grocery Industry for more than five decades. People do screw up and if their Debt Card is not accepted, well, they rely on their Credit Card.
BTW,observed this today at our Costco. The Lady ahead of us had used her Debit card a several Business's and her Card Security Agency blocked it after six uses until she calls the 800 number. Meanwhile, her Credit Card cleared with no hassle. My Spouse and I stepped up and offered to cover her bill, and after a brief Conversation,we figured why her Card went sour, and asked if she had her phone with her,and she checked it,sure enough, their was a Text asking her to verify that it was her at Costco. Meanwhile she was able to use her Charge Card to cover her bill.
And at our Neighborhood Smith's,their Customer base are Retirees and young couples. Been there and seen embarrassment as well as frustration when a simple screw up happens. Nothing more embarrassing for a Customer to leave a Cart Load of Groceries left behind because of a human mistake.
