New Mexico sues to block planned Holtec nuclear-waste facility

CAMDEN - The state of New Mexico has sued in an effort to block plans by Holtec International to store large amounts of nuclear waste there.

The lawsuit, filed against the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission, contends the federal agency is exceeding its authority in licensing the proposed facility. It asks a federal judge to stop the licensing process.

A staff report from the NRC in March 2020 recommended licensing the proposed facility.

Holtec's initial plans call for radioactive waste to be buried in 500 stainless steel canisters at a 1,000-acre site for 40 years. The firm says that number could grow to 10,000 canisters.

The complex, described as an "interim" storage site, would occupy 1,000 acres in a remote part of southeastern New Mexico.
