F-16 crashes at White Sands; pilot OK

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — A pilot from Holloman Air Force Base safely ejected from an F-16 Fighting Falcon about 8:45 a.m. Wednesday while on a training mission aboard the single-engine fighter jet, according to base officials.

The jet crashed near Salinas Peak on White Sands Missile Range about 25 miles south of Trinity Site in northwestern Sierra County. Base officials said the pilot was in good condition after being picked up by emergency responders.

The fighter jet is part of the 54th Fighter Group under the 56th Fighter Wing at Luke Air Force Base, near Glendale, Ariz.

The cause of the crash was not immediately known, and will be investigated by an Air Forced accident investigation team, according to base officials.
