1. K&R! The Albany Times Union was our local paper growing up

No matter where we lived, my parents always subscribed. And they had pages of Sunday funnies!

2. I make a point of using the newspapers

in the where state capitols are located since they tend to have more political news than is found in the other metro areas. I find in Texas that the best news sources for politics are the Austin and Dallas newspapers along with the Texas Tribune and Texas Standard which are independents.

4. I used to work with the newspapers when I provided their TV listings

In New York, it was New York Newsday and in Colorado it was the now defunct Rocky Mountain News. Is the Dallas Morning News a fairly unbiased paper? That was my impression, but I could obviously be wrong...

6. Well, the liberals say the DMN is too conservative

while the conservatives say that it is too liberal so I would say that it slightly to the right of center (this is Texas after all). Dallas County has voted for Democrats lately so they have moved more into that direction than what it was in the 80s and 90s. The alternative papers like the Dallas Observer, Houston Press and Austin Chronicle tend to fill the left side of the spectrum.

8. Ah! I was rather hoping it was a left of center paper

Since my Republican brother subscribes to it and I was hoping he had at least one source for reasonable ideas...

3. I forgot to mention

that one of my friends from college is a history professor at Union College in Schenectady so it is kind of cool finding out what is happening in his area.

5. Oh! I'm very familiar with Union College!

I went to Hamilton, so they were our chief football rival, LOL. I actually got to know quite a few from Union and they were nice people. Union is a comparable school in size, so we had a lot in common.

7. My alma mater, Southwestern

is also a small liberal arts college of about 1,500 students (it was around 1,000 when I attended) and we didn't have football from 1950 to 2013. We're a Div. III school now and I do enjoy watching the games online.

My friend at Union actually practiced law for about ten years before he became tired with the corporate world and went back for his PhD at the Univ. of Texas. When he was a student he had long blonde hair and a lot of people thought he resembled Tom Petty. I believe that he would prefer to have my hair now since I still have a good hairline and there are only a few stray gray strands in my brown hair.

9. That does sound a lot like my school

I preferred a smaller college where you know people - and teachers. There were 180 in my graduating class. Some classes were big, like the two semesters of Shakespeare required for English majors (I was a psych major ), held in the auditorium, while it wasn't unusual to have a dozen in some classes. In advanced acting, there were only seven of us.

My Republican brother brother thinks he knows more than I do about politics, likes to remind me that he has a Masters Degree in political science - from Southwest Texas State. He got his undergraduate degree at the University of Vermont...

10. Southwest Texas State is a party school, now it is Texas State University.

We used to joke at Southwestern that we were the "party school" since nobody knew about us. SWT is 35 miles south of Austin while we were about 30 miles to the north of Austin.

I went there briefly after I graduated and before I found a job to start work on a teaching certificate. I had slightly over a 3.0 GPA at Southwestern, but when I withdrew from SWT I was holding a 4.0 GPA with minimal effort. It is not a rigorous university and I had more multiple choice exams in one semester there than I did as an undergrad at Southwestern. The best thing about SWT was that there were a lot of cute girls there.

BTW, my smallest class at Southwestern was a second year of physics with only three students. The professor, Darth Roeder, was kind of sloppy with his algebra at the chalkboard and when the discussion was on Einstein's theory of relativity he ended up getting E=mc^3.
