City comptroller candidate Justin Brannan (D) denied $1.5M in matching funds because he didn't do training in time
City comptroller candidate Justin Brannan was denied more than $1.5 million in public matching funds by the citys Campaign Finance Board on Tuesday because he failed to undergo compliance training in time, records show.
The denial is temporary, and Brannans team said he expects to receive the full payout in March instead. Still, the withholding of cash comes as Brannans already trailing Manhattan Borough President Mark Levine in the fundraising battle for Junes Democratic comptroller primary.
Levine, the only other major candidate in the race, received a payment of over $628,000 in matching funds Tuesday, adding to the roughly $1.2 million he got in public cash last month for a total cash balance that tops $2 million.
Brannan, meantime, sat on a balance of about $300,000 as of the close of the last reporting period, all of it raised from private donors.
