Construction is underway at the North Carolina Zoo in Asheboro on a new 10-acre expansion that will spotlight Asia.

“Asia Continent,” which is expected to open in 2026, will highlight species such as tigers, Komodo dragons, Visayan warty pigs, Asian small-clawed otters, red-crowned cranes, wrinkled hornbills, king cobras and white-cheeked gibbons.

The area will also include a 300-seat indoor cafe overlooking the tiger’s habitat and an overhead tiger walk.

The enormous size of the NC Zoo is one of its best and worst aspects. It is very, very good for the animals and their habitats, but it is a challenge for visitors. There is a lot of walking across hundreds of acres currently developed (out of nearly three thousand). Brutally hot in the summer. The tram system is totally inadequate.

In spite of these issues, I have loved this zoo since it opened forty years ago. I was saddened to learn that the wonderful aviary is permanently closed. The domed facility needs to be demolished and someday replaced.
