Tim Moore has repeatedly shown that he is more interested in consolidating his own power than governing. And now he has proposed a rules change that allows him to unilaterally and without warning call a veto override vote so that he and the Republican Party can vote to override a veto by Governor Cooper at the drop of a hat.

That’s why today we held a press conference at the legislature to make it clear to lawmakers that North Carolinians deserve a transparent and accountable legislature. It’s important that voters let Tim Moore know that they won’t stand for this blatant power grab.

The house rules for the last session required advance notice to ensure all representatives are on the floor for crucial decisions. Speaker Moore wants to eliminate this window so that he can override Governor Cooper’s vetoes swiftly and without a democratic process.

If Moore gets his way, crucial issues on personal freedoms and individual rights could be voted on without every representative present. With this change, a single illness, family emergency, or even bathroom break could mean the loss of important freedoms for all of North Carolina. We deserve to have our elected leaders participate in the job we sent them to Raleigh to do.

The public deserves to know when and what legislation is being debated and voted on, and we deserve all our representatives to have a fair chance to represent us. A hastily called vote while a representative is out for surgery does everyone a disservice.

Do other states like California wait? Maybe they should follow their process? California has a supermajority as well.
