A hospital is suing to move a quadriplegic 18-year-old to a nursing home. She says no

Joseph Shapiro

From her hospital bed, Alexis Ratcliff asks a question: "What 18-year-old gets sued?"

Ratcliff is that 18-year-old, sued by the hospital in Winston-Salem, N.C., that wants her to leave.

Ratcliff, a quadriplegic who uses a ventilator, has lived at Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist since she was 13. She wants to leave, too. But not to the nursing home the hospital found for her in another state.

She wants to live in a home nearby, close to her family and school.

It could be that she needs specialized care that not all nursing homes have. jimfields33 Feb 2024 #4
Not exactly. By law, the state is required to set her up and pay for everything. littlemissmartypants Feb 2024 #6
Should they use the republican death panel and just kill her? keithbvadu2 Feb 2024 #5

It would be bad enough to be quadriplegic, but to be taken away from your family and friends is unbearable. She probably won't live long without her loved ones.

It's explained in the article. If they move her out of state she loses her health care status in North Carolina. The hospital was trying to pull a fast one because they need her bed and will likely get better reimbursement from paying customers who have private insurance and not the Medicaid she has.

They most likely get a flat rate from Medicaid. They can make more money by using that bed for frequent turnover of complex patients who require a higher level of care and therfore make more money for the hospital and its shareholders.

???

'Pro-life' to conservatives/republicans is a myth.

Republicans are in favor of killing living babies and have done so.

The supposed pro-lifers cared naught when the state of Texas (republican gov, republican Prez) deliberately killed living baby Sun Hudson against the mother's wishes because he was an inconvenience to the state.

It is not a matter of life to the supposed pro-lifers.

It is a matter of control.
