Plane flying with 'restore Silent Sam' banner seen over Butner
By Natalie Matthews, WRAL.com editor
BUTNER, N.C. Multiple residents in Butner spotted a plane flying around the area with a Confederate flag and a banner that read "restore Silent Sam."
One resident said she first spotted the plane at about 11:25 Saturday morning. She said it was the first time she had seen something like this in the sky.
The Silent Sam statue was toppled by protesters on Aug. 20 after being an issue of contention at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill for years.
Since the statue fell, McCorkle Place has been the sight of additional protests, from those who want the statue to return and those who do not want to see it back on the UNC-Chapel Hill campus.
The Silent Sam statue has been in storage since it was toppled.
Chancellor Carol Folt's administration and the UNC-Chapel Hill Board of Trustees have until Nov. 15 to submit a plan for the statue's future to the UNC Board of Governors.

(25,739 posts)North Raleigh should be safe and seeing as how this is about Silent Sam anyway it is targeting a pretty specific group and locale. Maybe they will make a trip past Margaret Spellings house, that might even hasten her exit. Thanks for sharing the "racism" NRaleighLiberal. It is a good reminder that it's closer than we think and we need to stay alert 'cause you never know who you can trust anymore, especially lately. I am personally thankful they didn't spend the money on palm cards for the amendments. How about you?
