Bill to give free year of tuition to STEM students fails in North Dakota Senate

BISMARCK — A bill that would have given STEM students a break on tuition their senior year failed to garner enough votes Friday in the Senate.

Senate Bill 2334, introduced by Sen. Curt Kreun, R-Grand Forks, would have created a senior year tuition waiver program for students majoring in a field of science, technology, engineering or mathematics.

Students would have received their senior year tuition-free only if they remained employed in North Dakota for at least three years after graduation.

The bill received a 6-1 “do not pass” recommendation from the Senate Education committee.

2. Education reform should include vocational tech for all

We have lost practical life skills focus. It would be useful to build a model that includes a year of hands-on skills training for all....even the college-bound.

I was fortunate to spend two years at a vocational-technical high school. I spent about eight hours per week learning about how stuff works, and how it is made. It was the most useful period of my advanced education.
