COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Gov. Mike DeWine on Sunday sharply criticized the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for granting only limited use of a new mask-cleaning technology developed by an Ohio research firm, saying the decision would harm the nations fight to protect front-line medical workers against the coronavirus.
DeWine had touted the new technology, developed by Battelle, at a Saturday news conference, saying his administration was pushing the FDA to approve its use in Ohio and three areas hit hard -- Seattle, New York and Washington D.C. The firm said it could sterilize up to 160,000 respirator masks per day in Ohio alone.
But the FDA only granted Battelle permission to clean masks at its Columbus headquarters, and only 10,000 per day.
The FDAs decision to severely limit the use of this life-saving technology is nothing short of reckless, DeWine said in a statement. Battelles innovative technology has the capability to protect healthcare professionals and first responders in Ohio and across the country, but in this time of crisis, the FDA has decided not to support those who are risking their lives to save others. This is a matter of life and death. I am not only disappointed by this development, but Im also stunned that the FDA would decline to do all it can to protect this countrys frontline workers in this serious time of need.
DeWine and Lt. Gov. Jon Husted will continue fighting for increased use of this life-saving technology, the governors office said in its statement.> END

(16,412 posts)Perhaps, it's because no one in the Trump circle owns stock in Battelle...so the FDA is withholding wider permission, until some stock buys are made...

What would cause chaos like very limited medical care, police, fire fighters & EMTs?

(13,675 posts)See...if you can do 10,000 why "limit" or " ration" out essential supplies wherein we already have a life threatening shortage? We really are only sterilizing because we don't have near 1/2 enough of supplies and will need 10,000 fold more....so, limiting is more of a business model...
This FDA approval should only be Yes or No...not how many may we do permission...They already approved the process...

Question for me is this: Why do they want people to die & be (presumably) incapacitated with lung dysfunction? 😳🤯

(5,315 posts)is in Trump's pocket. I doubt the head of the FDA was the one who made this decision. It may have been the head of a particular division within FDA.

(5,315 posts)of the phase I tests of this technology from 2015.
As far as I can tell, this has never been tested on humans (i.e., with people using the masks). I suspect that one of the concerns is whether the process leaves any residue on the masks which health care workers would then be inhaling directly into their lungs. The process uses Bioquell Hydrogen Peroxide Vapor (HPV) to decontaminate the masks. The FDA probably approved 10,000 initially to make sure there are not any short term disastrous effects on the people using the masks.
