Ohio lawmakers pass bill to legalize consumer use of fireworks, DeWine expected to sign it
Ohioans would be allowed to legally set off Roman candles, firecrackers, bottle rockets and other consumer-grade fireworks on designated days, under a bill that is likely to be signed into law by Gov. Mike DeWine.
DeWine, a long-time advocate for child safety, vetoed a similar bill in July but his spokesman said that the new version addresses the governor's concerns.
“We’ve been down this road before,” said Sen. Michael Rulli, R-Salem. “There’s a lot of things that the governor wanted in this bill that we took to heart.”
Ohio's current law only permits consumers to use sparklers and a handful of other pyrotechnics. Consumers are allowed to purchase other fireworks but can't legally ignite them in Ohio and are required to take them out of state within 48 hours.
