Lake County commissioner tied to federal election probe was injured in helicopter crash, charged with petty theft in previous job as county radio tech


CLEVELAND, Ohio -- The Lake County Commissioner connected to an investigation into an attempted election data breach once worked as a radio technician in the county telecommunications job until his 1995 conviction for stealing a $250 power drill from a local hardware store, according to court records.

John Hamercheck (R) said at the time that he forgot to pay for the drill and cited a head injury he suffered in a 1989 helicopter crash that also happened while he was working for the county, according to court records.

He was convicted of petty theft after a trial in Mentor Municipal Court, but an appeals court later threw out his conviction based on a technicality.

Cleveland.com and The Plain Dealer have requested Hamercheck’s Lake County personnel file.

Hamercheck is now connected to an investigation into how data from Lake County’s election computer system ended up on display at a so-called cyber symposium as part of My Pillow founder Mike Lindell’s quest to overturn the results of the 2020 election. The symposium and Lindell’s other efforts to uncover evidence that ex-President Donald Trump defeated now-President Joe Biden have been unsuccessful.
