Travis Nelson, an Oregon lawmaker who is Black, stopped by state police twice in a week

The Oregon Legislature has been in session for just under a month. Since then, one Black lawmaker has been stopped twice by Oregon State Police while driving between Salem and his home in Portland.

The second stop came a day after Rep. Travis Nelson, D-NE Portland, gave a speech on the House floor about Tyree Nichols, who died after five Memphis police officers beat him following a traffic stop on Jan. 7. The officers have been fired and charged with murder.

Nelson is hopeful the conversation about police stops that have emerged from his own experience is just beginning.

"It's been interesting," Nelson said in an interview with the Statesman Journal.
